Easy Service Monitor (EMS) Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Why EMS returns error 'Selected collating sequence not supported by the operating system'?
A. You may use a Windows OS other than the English language system, or your system doesn't support multiple languages. You can fix this problem by the following two means:
1. Download the latest version of Easy Service Monitor and Enable Support for English Languages in Windows.
2. Open 'Easy Service Monitor\*.mdb' in your Microsoft Access and copy all the table into a new database. Using this new database file overwrite the old 'Easy Service Monitor\*.mdb' and it will work well.
Q. Can ESM recover the service when it is down?
A. Yes. For example, you may install ESM on the machine which the application is run, and config EMS to restart the computer or re-run the application under certain criteria. In this case if the service does not work properly, ESM will restart your computer or the application to recover the service.
Q. Can ESM monitor POP3 services via proxy?
A. No. The current version of ESM can only monitor web page using proxy.
Q. How should I config EMS if my HTTP services are installed at port 8080?
A. With ESM you can create new services to be monitored, which provides you the freedom in dealing with various conditions. You can find details on how to customize your services in the ESM help file.
Q. I had selected the Phone call alert method, but it does not work. Why?
A. It requires a modem in your machine which should be connected with a phone line for the Phone call alert to work.
Q. I set the monitoring time interval at five minutes. Later it was changed to one minute. Why?
A. If ESM detects an error of the service, it will automatically set the time interval to one minute. When the accumulated fault times for the service reached the predefined trigger and ESM starts alarm, or the service returns to normal status, the time interval will resume to five minutes as you set.
Q. Will ESM record every fault on the services or devices monitored?
A. Yes. ESM has a log file which records all the errors happened and you can easily see this log file by clicking the "View log" button in ESM's button area.
Q. I noticed that even though I had the check box enabled for "start with windows", some times the "easy service monitor" option is not listed in the services control panel (there used to be one). How can I make it stay there?
A. Click "start with windows" (no matter it enabled or disabled), then click "Save Record". Enabled the check box for "start with windows" again, then click "save record".
Q. In the Alarm configuration page, I added an E-Mail to receive alarm. It works when I test it. After I exit ESM and start it again, the email that I entered disappeared and the default value appears. Why?
A. You must save the changes before exit. Just click the "Save" button under the "Copy" button when you changes any parameters.
Q. I am using EMS to monitor about 60 targets. Sometimes I get 'unreachable' status on targets that I know are 'alive'. What could be the problem?
A. EMS check targets within certain time limits. If exceeded, it will list as "unreachable". You can increase the "timeout (seconds)" to make sure those slow response services have sufficient time to response.
Q. "Can I turn on/off alarms/alerts for all monitored targets by a single action, instead of doing it one-by-one?"
A. Yes. You may right click the ESM icon at the Windows monitoring bar and click "Stop Notify" item. Or, in the List page and Check Status tab, you may select all records that you want stop alerts, right click mouse to show the popup menu, then click menu "Disable Selected Item".
Q. Can user change or set alarm/alert for all selected items at same time?
A. No, they can't in the current version.
Q. Can I customize DB Port scans on non-default ports?
A. Yes, it support DB Port scans on non-default ports. Just like customizing other services, firstly, you need to select the service item ( Oracle or SQL Server), then click the button "Copy".At the bottom of the item list, a new item will appear. Select the new item, and change the port as you wish. Make sure to click the button "Save" to save the new Port configuration.
