Monitoring with CyberGauge

This tutorial provides a step-by-step guide for configuring CyberGauge's Monitoring options to help you monitor and secure your network.

Step 1 of 8: Bring Up Charting Window

Bring up the charting window for the interface you would like to configure.

Step 2 of 8: Configure the Interface Options

Click on the Configure... button to bring up the "Interface Configuration" window.

configure

The first tab displays the configuration options. The chart will automatically adjust and scale based on your selections.

The "Interface Type" and "Bandwidth Metric" are selected based on the information reported from your device's MIB (Management Information Base). Usually, the MIB will report the correct speed for your requirements. However, your device may not report the most useful settings. One example: your device is your broadband connection and has a maximum speed greater than your internet connection. In this case, you would want to set the bandwidth to match the speed of your internet connection.

CyberGauge also sets "Connection Type" based on the information received from your device. If your device is full-duplex Ethernet link (data can be transmitted in both directions on a signal carrier at the same time) and is detected as baseband, change the connection type to full-duplex.

Some connections such as cable modems have two transfer rates: a higher rate for downloads and a slower rate for uploads. In this case, set the bandwidth metric to the higher of the two channels and then switch the display from "% Bandwidth" to "Bits/Seconds" since the percentage figure would not be a true representation of your bandwidth usage.

Step 3 of 8: Export Options

You can use the Export options to automatically save the throughput data on a regular basis to create extended reports. Click on the "Export" tab to view the export options.

Step 4 of 8: JPEG Options

CyberGauge can automatically create JPEG images of your throughput charts for graphical and web-based reports. Click on the "JPEG" tab then choose to overwrite the image file with an updated file or create time-stamped files to maintain a history. Choose the FTP option to automatically save images to a remote location or a web server to create web-based reports.

Step 5 of 8: Alert Options

Alerts can help you maintain security by determining if your device is the target of attack or excessive abuse. In addition, alerts can help you discover network problems before your network users have the opportunity to notify you.

Click on the "Alerts" tab to set alert conditions for the device you're monitoring. You may choose to receive alerts if the device is unresponsive, becomes responsive again, or exceeds the bandwidth percentage or throughput you specify.

configure_alerts

The first time you run CyberGauge, only the "Default" alert will be in place. If you haven't set any alerts and want to use more than one type of alert, follow the steps in Lesson 3: CyberGauge Alerts. (CyberGauge Alert Options

Step 6 of 8: Report Options

Click on the "Reports" tab to produce billing and QoS (Quality of Service) reports on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. QoS reports include information on the number of monitoring intervals, percentage downtime, number of device restarts, and total traffic processed. These reports are helpful for capacity planning, billing and verifying QoS levels provided by Internet service providers.

configure_report

You may save the reports in text or HTML format and optionally FTP the reports to a remote location or a web server to create web-based reports.

Step 7 of 8: Color Options

If you are running Windows, click on the "Colors" tab to set the chart's color options. If you are on Macintosh, use the "Colors" menu on the chart window itself to change the colors.

configure_color

These settings are used for real-time chart display as well as exported JPEG images. For duplex interfaces, you can set colors for Data In and Data Out lines separately. For baseband, set the color for in and out. In addition, you can set the background color for your charts.

Step 8 of 8: Save Options

Click "OK" on the dialog box to save your settings. If you are monitoring more than one interface, CyberGauge will ask if you would like to copy your changes to the other monitored interfaces on this device. If you choose yes, all the applicable changes will be applied automatically to the other interfaces on that device. The settings for other devices will not be affected.
