OLAP: Online Analytical Processing
Online Analytical Processing is a type of software that allows for the real-time analysis of data stored in a database. It is an approach to quickly provide the answer to analytical queries that are dimensional in nature. The OLAP server is normally a separate component that contains specialized algorithms and indexing tools to efficiently process data mining tasks with minimal impact on database performance. The typical applications of OLAP are in business reporting for sales, marketing, management reporting, business performance management (BPM), budgeting and forecasting, financial reporting and similar areas.
